The city is divided into two distinct parts: first the Medina, the historical city, and secondly, the most modern Gueliz, or "New City", built in European style. Medina is a maze of narrow streets and quaint shops. In contrast, Gueliz has to offer modern restaurants, fast food chains and shopping outlets.
Marrakech is one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco, known among other things for his famous Jemaa el Fna (Jama el Fna '). You will surely enjoy the Gnaoua, the Aïssâwa, etc ...
Marrakech has an international airport receiving direct flights from Paris, London, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Madrid as well as flights to many budget airlines from all over Europe. If you come from another continent than Europe, you will catch a connection to Casablanca. The latter is a 45-minute flight from Marrakech. Locally, Royal Air Morocco, offers flights from Agadir, Casablanca (daily), Fez (daily), Ouarzazate, Al Hoceima, and Tangier.
Change and distributors at the airport
Note that distributors usually give only large bills 100 and 200 dirhams it is better to break as soon as possible for your daily expenses such small water bottles or taxi. Moreover, distributors are generally being met on Monday, some will find themselves empty weekend comes. For safety, always try to have a little in advance, some retailers are more temperamental than other currencies. In general, the maximum withdrawal is 2000Dh, but do not hesitate to contact your bank.
Located about 5km (3 miles) from the city, you can, if you are lightly loaded, take the bus (line 19). Otherwise, take a taxi, there is about 15 minutes from the heart of the Medina Airport. Expect that the driver is trying to scam you: local pay 40 dirhams in the day for a run from the medina, but we can try to ask you to 500 dirhams.
walk
If you are lightly loaded, it's doable, but you will take between 1:30 ET 2:00. There is a footpath along the road and the minaret of the Koutoubia mosque will provide a good benchmark to which direct you. If you have time, you can make a detour to see the Menara Gardens, located in the airport and the city.
Given the diversity of modes of transport (taxis, carriages, mopeds, bicycles ...), we understand why the traffic is so difficult to Marrakech. Police officers positioned at the crossroads of the new city (Gueliz) are about effective to regulate traffic, and more traffic lights. In Medina, there is no fire in working condition, and the few agents are content to make grand gestures giving blasts, which of course is useless ...
If you rent a car, be very careful because the traffic is quite dangerous (much more than in other Moroccan cities). In the medina in particular, no one respects traffic signs or the rules of the road!
Avoid venturing into the medina by car: the streets are very narrow and often congested with bicycles, mopeds, pedestrians, carts. There are many guarded parking lots where you can leave your vehicle.
Some tips on the road: Traffic between midnight and 5 am is not recommended (even Moroccans shun): the roads are not really safe, and we can possibly get mugged! On the roads around Marrakech, pay attention to the heavyweights, including large taxis (a golden rule of driving in Morocco: the biggest has priority!) Stay alert, especially near cities: mules, mopeds, carts, cyclists, pedestrians may walk without a light on the road...
